Gabrielle Thomson (who mostly goes by Gabby) contains multitudes. She doesn't like to cram herself into any one particular box, but she does love a nice box. Or basket. And so, here are a few of her favourite boxes to inhabit.
Gabby lives in Canada with her husband, two kids, and dog. She did not grow up in Canada and finds the winter months horribly depressing; therefore, she frequently uses winter as an excuse to sit by the fireplace for hours at a time, reading, knitting, or writing her next novel.
As a military kid (Coast Guard brat), Gabby grew up moving around the U.S. every couple of years. In 2013, her family was transferred to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, where she attended 'real' school for the first time in Grade 11. She was homeschooled until this point and hopes it's not painfully obvious. It was in Ottawa that she met her future husband, Simon. After moving back to the US for university and four years of long distance dating, they got married, and Gabby immigrated back to Canada.
When she's not writing or spending time with family, she works as a nurse. Gabby works both in the hospital as a High Risk Obstetrics RN and in the community at a transition clinic for new moms and babies. She truly believes that as a labor and delivery nurse, she has the most incredible job in the world: witnessing families grow and supporting patients through one of the most vulnerable of life experiences. She considers it one of the greatest honours, being present at her patients' births. Gabby is also incredibly passionate about women's health care, ensuring equitable care for all, and supporting lifelong health and wellness. Often she finds these passions flow in parallel with her writing, and they make their way into many of her stories.
Gabby also spends a significant amount of time trying to create beautiful things with her cozy, grandma activities like knitting, sewing, crocheting, painting, etc. She also spends way too much money trying out new "-ing" hobbies, her latests obsession being "weaving," though she hasn't forked over the cash for a giant floor loom just yet.
Through these therapeutic meditations, Gabby explores life through the lens of her craft. When knitting a sweater or sewing clothes she was inspired to learn about fast fashion industry and the effect of poorly constructed clothes on the environment. Learning to garden and grow food, she mourned the decline of small scale farming and locally grown food. While making her home beautiful, she questioned the futility of poorly designed furniture and the disappearance of the 'heirloom'. She sees art and creativity as forms of resistance, and loves to dabble everywhere she can.
A lifelong reader and writer, Gabby still finds the most joy with either a notebook or a
book in hand. Some of her favourite reads recently have been Parable of the Talents, by Octavia E. Butler, I Who Have Never Known Men, by Jacqueline Harpman, Death's End by Cixin Liu, and Never Let Me Go, by Kazuo Ishiguro.
She aspires to write thought provoking books with engaging prose that explore humanity, society, religion, and an individual's place in it all.
